What it Means to be a FOTAS Dog Foster Volunteer

When you become a FOTAS Dog Foster, you are joining a community of hard-working, dedicated, and caring animal lovers. You are offering your home, time, and love to dogs in need. We greatly appreciate you joining our team!

When bringing a dog into your home, you will be providing them with training guidance and structure to help prepare them for their forever homes. You will be treating a foster dog as if they are your own: playing, exercising, cuddling, and teaching!

FOTAS works with you to get foster dogs adopted. We utilize word of mouth, social media, outreach events, and adoption events to help get your foster into their forever home. You can share photos, videos, and write-ups about your dog on your own social media outlets, as well as sharing them with the Dog Foster Community.

This is a wonderful and personal way to help save homeless pets. Please apply to become a foster today!

  1. To become a dog foster volunteer, you will first submit an application online or in person.
  2. Once your application is received, the Dog Foster Coordinator will call you for a short interview. This is a chance for us to get to know you, and for you to get to know FOTAS.
  3. From there you will attend an in-person orientation where we will go over all there is to know about fostering dogs with FOTAS.
  4. We will schedule a home visit where the Dog Foster Coordinator will come by to better understand what kind of dog personality you would match well with and answer any specific questions you might have about bringing a dog into your home. Our Dog Foster Handbook (PDF) is full of helpful information.
  5. Once these important steps are completed, you will be part of our foster community and will begin receiving requests to foster!
  6. You and FOTAS will work together to find your foster’s forever home, a life-changing experience for everyone!

Still have questions? Please contact the FOTAS Dog Foster Coordinator.

Our Cat Foster Handbook contains valuable information including advice and techniques recommended by our veteran foster volunteers, as well as methods found to be successful at foster programs all over the country. This handbook should be considered a reference for anything and everything foster related.

Other Volunteer Opportunities in the Dog Foster Program

  1. Foster Field Trips: Foster Field Trip Volunteers provide outings for dogs in the foster program! Foster Families will be provided with a list of Field Trip Volunteers and will reach out to Field Trippers for outings. As a Field Trip Volunteer, you will pick up a foster dog, take them out for an agreed upon amount of time, and return them happy and healthy to their Foster Family.
  2. Adoption Counselors: Adoption Counselors play an important role in the adoption of our Foster Dogs! Adoption Counselors will call up recent FOTAS adopters to check in, answer any questions, and get adoption updates.
  3. Transport: Those volunteering in transport will help get supplies to our Foster Dogs! You can transport dog food, crates, and various supplies to the Foster Families. You can also help out at events and assist in transporting supplies to and from events.
  4. Outreach & Adoption Events: Participate in our local events and have a great time meeting new people and talking up FOTAS! We have a lot of events and a lot of volunteer opportunities. In addition to our outreach and adoption events, we also have monthly vaccination clinics that could always use your help.
